Exercise in Tuning In-A Meditation

Our world is filled with countless sounds, flavors, textures, smells, and colors. There is always something to experience. But there is more happening around us than most people are aware of—there is another field of information that our physical awareness cannot perceive. This field contains thoughts, ideas, concepts, wisdom, teachings, and inspiration. It’s all around us, all the time. Accessing information in this field takes practice, but we can all do it. Here’s a short exercise, a meditation, to help you tap into your extra-sensory awareness-or what is commonly called your “sixth sense.”

Often, it is easiest to access these details with your eyes closed, because closing your eyes can decrease distractions. Have a pen and paper handy. With eyes closed or open, without expectation, allow your mind to open to the experience. Visualize signals or waves carrying data flowing all around you, and set an intention to notice this field of information. Relax. Select a wave and imagine yourself merging with it. Let the wave surround you, enveloping all of you. Now, sense the information it carries within it. The information comes to you in thoughts or in sounds, or maybe you see pictures in your head. Once you have engaged with the information, take a deep breath and come back into your awareness of your physical surroundings. It is helpful to write down your experience afterward because it is easy to forget it, and looking back to see how your practice develops is beneficial.
